When I am not photographing weddings, I'm probably bulk watching the TV show Friends (it's my absolute favourite, and I watch seasons 1-10 on repeat), or running amok with my dogs and lambs in my paddocks. My wife and I have two beagles and three lambs, and we love them more than life. My favourite food is pizza and chocolate, and I love cosy winter nights on the couch. We live on a farm that we hope to fill with lots of rescue baby farm animals and raise a family one day.

My two favourite music artists are Alec Benjamin and Troye Sivan. My favourite movie is Titanic (and I watch it once every 6 months, it's compulsory in my house), and I once crashed my bike into someone's campfire and walked away unharmed haha.

I've been a photographer for 10 years now, specialising in weddings for 7 years. I run this business full time, along with my wife Riley, who is my associate photographer. Sharing a love for photography is something truly special that we value.

Welcome to KMerritt Photography, my name is Katie.

And I would love to be your photographer! I know there are lots of us out there -- people who photograph sweet little cherubs and baby bumps -- and so many do a great job. As a mother myself, though, and as someone so passionate about photography, I’m dedicated to perfecting each and every image I capture, I can’t help but want to capture more tiny toes, button noses and sweet smiles. 

A little more about me; Photography has been a passion of mine, and I’ve always been particularly interested in working with Newborn’s, and I am proud of the way I’ve honed my craft. I have also worked in childcare for 19 years, alongside being the eldest of 5 siblings (the youngest being 16 years younger than myself) and the eldest of 19 grandchildren so to say I’ve been surrounded by children all my life is an understatement. Still, I love every minute of it and wouldn’t wish it any other way. I decided to follow my dream and passion for photography finally. Still, I didn’t want to lose being surrounded by little ones every day, so I thought I would combine the two and specialise in newborns, children and families so I could have the best of both worlds.

Photography makes me feel like I’m living a dream. I love my life, and I love meeting and photographing all my clients. 

Whether you’re a brand new mummy, someone who’s been in the game for a few years or you have yet to give birth to your precious bun, one fact remains true: photographs of your children & your family are so important. Not just because they grow and change so fast, but because they last forever and because your loved ones want to stay in the know!

I capture it all, too. Maternity photos, newborn sessions, milestone photography, sibling pictures, family pictures and beyond. All those moments and details, they’re absolutely worth preserving. 

We recommend your Newborn sessions to be in the first 2 weeks whilst they are nice and sleepy & not having much awake time. It ensures they are easily posed. Within the first 7-10 days is the best time. I recommend you make your Newborn session booking during your pregnancy, at least 3 months in advance to ensure you don’t miss out on capturing these beautiful memories.

I would recommend your maternity sessions to be done when you’re about 32-36 weeks when you’re glowing and really showing your beautiful bump. The maternity sessions can be held in the studio or at a location.

Our Family Sessions can be booked for either in the studio or at a location if you have somewhere special in mind.

Cake Smashes are also available; however, you will need to supply your own cake due to the risk of allergies.

Behind this fancy website, I’m a very chatty, accidentally funny, happily married, puppy parent, hot chip addict, and a lover of plants, cuddles, cozy blankets and people’s stories. And although I’m technically an extrovert, my favourite place in the whole world is at home, chilling with my husband Dan, our two dogs Oscar and Ollie, and our cat Tyke (yup I’m outnumbered 4 to 1 by dudes).

Creativity is in my DNA; my mother and both grandmothers are talented artists, cross-stitchers & knitters. Personally, I love to paint (acrylic + watercolour), crochet, but I also know how to sew and every now and then I’ll go through a phase of making my own clothes.

But I wasn’t always this cool.

For a really long time, I dismissed these parts of myself. So much so, that I ended up studying and practising law for the first ten years post-high school. I ended up working as a family lawyer, helping people get divorced - which you’ll find even funnier when I tell you that I hate conflict .

You really can’t fight yourself forever though. And in 2015, I decided to quit my tiny office, follow my heart and become a full-time photographer of love stories instead. Talk about irony, am I right?!

How did I even go from law to photography? Well, it all started with a $300 camera (a Canon 40D for the camera nerds out there) that I bought from my housemate so I could start a baking blog. You can read more about my story in this blog post here.

And as much as I hated being a lawyer, I wouldn’t change a second of my experience. It taught me so much about people, gave me an incredibly unique perspective on love and showed me just how important those “little moments” are to us all.

More importantly, though? It made me deeply passionate about creating an incredible experience for each and every person who steps in front of my camera, that is about so much more than just having your photo taken.

We let ourselves be hypnotised by others, we’re fluent in feelings, and we believe magic lives everywhere — especially in those fleeting moments no one else really notices. 

Us hopeless romantics make the best photographers because we see the world through a rose-coloured lens.

These days, it’s not so on-trend to admit to the world that you’re a hopeless romantic. But that’s the good thing about hopeless romantics: we’re not exactly shy when love is involved. We let ourselves be hypnotised by others, we’re fluent in feelings, and we believe magic lives everywhere — especially in those fleeting moments no one else really notices. Us hopeless romantics make the best photographers because we see the world through a rose-coloured lens. 

Still, my connection with the camera took me by surprise. A few years ago, my dad — a photography enthusiast — upgraded his camera, and I got hold of the hand-me-down. It was a bit serendipitous if you ask me. I learned the ropes and began shooting landscapes which, come to think of it, isn’t that different from my wedding photography style: unobtrusively documenting natural moments as they unfold before my eyes. 

The difference with a wedding — your wedding — is that there’s so much more magic to be had. I find (and capture) this magic in both the grand gestures and fleeting moments. An expression here, a belly laugh there—the movement of a dress, the dance of golden light. A special moment you didn’t realise was being captured. A long hug with a loved one. The sight of a late-night dancefloor that suggests you really had to be there. I blend documentary and editorial photography to visually tell your story so that it not only expresses who you are as a couple but transports you back to the moment every time you look at your photos. 

If I’ve learned anything, it’s that the most beautiful moments aren’t born simply from creativity. To achieve magic, it also takes organisation and communication — but I’m sure you know all about that. Leading up to your day, I’ll be involved and collaborative. We’ll meet in person, plan concepts, talk timelines and visit venues. But on the day? If not for some helpful portrait direction, you wouldn’t even know I’m there.

After studying photography at Uni in the late ’90s, I worked as a graphic designer and for an internet company, until we decided to start Millgrove Photography in 2010. After the very first wedding I shot, I knew that I absolutely loved it and it was where I was going to focus from then on.

I’m not an “in your face” kind of guy – lots of our couples tell me later that “we didn’t even notice you being there” – which is exactly how I think it’s supposed to be!

I photograph most of the day as it happens, but I will always give direction on where to be for the right light and will always be ready to capture those fleeting moments. When I need your or any of your guest's attention, I will call for it, but every single photo is crafted with intention, whether it is a fly on the wall moment or when we are strolling around the grounds of your venue. There will be no stiff posing with forced smiles, and I will extract the emotion and energy the both of you have together. By the end of the day when you are unwinding at your reception, you will see me getting in on all the party action and documenting memories forever.

That has been going for 12 years now. It, of course, started off as a hobby, which grew into a business selling prints when digital photography became a more commonplace way of taking photographs. The journey into wedding photography was by chance, helping a friend out photographing his sister’s wedding. Ever since it turned into a full-time career after being in the automotive accessory retail and wholesale trade for 18 years, yes he’s that old! To date, there have been over 300 weddings photographed for various leading studios and under his own brand.

Full-time photography started off when there was an opening to work for a real estate company shooting photo and video to work alongside the weddings which are seasonal in Melbourne. This opened doors to more commercial work that leant towards a speciality in restaurants and fitness/gyms. His careful eye for detail and composition also translates into his wedding work with very precise lines, framing and editing. Having a customer service background, he is very client-focused. He aims to get down to the crux of why they want to hire a professional photographer or videographer, all in order to service his clients better.

He can talk about scotch whiskeys all day, the ups and downs of real estate, custom car building and restoration, melts at the sight of dogs and cats and loves to lift heavy things and put them down repetitively. Lives in the outer eastern suburbs with his partner Rachael and her two fur babies.

You don’t even know where to start (that’s why I highly recommend hiring a planner!), but know you want certain vendors. Whether it’s because your friend used amazing vendors at her wedding you loved, or you’ve been following them awhile on social media, or maybe you head to The Knot to find more options, things start coming together!

And when it’s time to pick a photographer, it’s important not to view this as just something to check off from your list of things to get done! A photographer is one of my most important vendors for your wedding day!!

When it comes to planning your wedding there are a lot of things to think about, consider and budget for. The list will seem endless, and you may not know where to start, yet when it comes to wedding planning, there are certainly a few things that should be your starting point and priority.

Why Wedding Photography Is So Important

The most important part of a wedding is the couple, and that is what it is all about, and that is all that matters at the end of the day. However, when it comes to planning the big day you shall speak to a lot of suppliers, from florists, bridal boutiques, caterers, stationery designers, the list goes on, all these people will tell you how important it is to get it right. Getting the right flowers, having the best food, it is all about the dress, that is good, you want to work with passionate people, however, are these a priority when planning your wedding? Of course, they should be included, and I am not saying you should leave out any of these, but are they more important than wedding photography?

I read and hear about a lot of couples who only have a small budget left for their photography, couples who are struggling to find photography they like for their wedding coming up very soon, and couples who are not having a photographer as they just cannot afford one. These couples haven’t put very much importance on photography…

Why Expensive Wedding Photographers are Worth Every Cent

Why should you choose an expensive wedding photographer moreover a cheaper one that appears to offer the same deal on paper? Why choose a photographer that gives you only 200 – 250 high-resolution photos instead of the one that offers the whopping 600 for a fraction of the price? These are some of the most debated questions we photographers deal with every day.

But instead of me trying to explain why some photographers are so expensive, let’s first look at why budget photographers are so cheap.

Experience

Almost all new wedding photographers have low prices to book weddings so they can begin to build a portfolio. The unfortunate thing is that even though they may have awesome talent and a good eye for shooting landscapes and flowers, they will make plenty of mistakes and you, on your special day, will end up with poor results. Weddings are fast-paced and unpredictable; they did not allow for reshoots.

Certain skills can only be acquired with experience. Split-second decision making is required when all does not go to plan – unexpected weather changes, equipment failure, accidents, delays. But for the seasoned photographer, these situations are easily dealt with, as they’ve probably experienced a similar problem. But it’s not only the problem-solving skills that come with experience, but it’s also the knowledge of how the behaviour of light changes in different locations, the familiarity of working at the top wedding venues, the luxury of knowing other service providers (videographers, wedding planners, make up artists, etc.) that might affect your ability to capture the day, the anticipation of where to be to get the best shot, and so much more.

So ask yourself: Am I willing to risk my precious wedding photos on a person that is still learning and building up experience? What will bring you back to that lovely day? Yes, you are right – memories. When you look at your wedding photos, you will wish you had professional photos that expertly captured all feelings and details of your wedding day.

Equipment

With the advent of the digital age and the low prices of entry-level Digital SLR Cameras and lens kits, becoming a wedding photographer (or should I say part-time wedding photographer) has never been easier. So instead of making a full-time career swap, you can now “test” what used to be a hobby, for a while – and it won’t break the bank.

Top photographers have the best professional equipment and carry at least 3-5 of these to ensure good lighting when needed. And they know HOW to use it because their cameras are not from a rental office. A cheap photographer probably is very likely to have no back-up camera or other equipment.

But the camera equipment is only half of what is needed to fulfil the job. The editing is where a lot of the magic happens. Most cheaper photographers will not spend the huge amount of money on decent editing software and for a good quality computer and colour-true monitor to run it on. I can also guarantee you that most of them do not make a backup of your wedding, so if his/her computer goes up in flames, so will your photos!

Now that we know why some photographers are so cheap to let’s explore the reasons why others are so expensive.

Time

All expensive photographers are full-time photographers. Doing photography full-time means you probably channel most of your time and energy to the development of your skill and product. Did you know that the physical act of taking the photos only makes up 15% of our job? The editing of photos and producing albums account for another big chunk. The rest of the time is spent on the things all businesses have to do, like administration, marketing and networking. I recently had a prospective client ask me: What do you mean by editing? At first, I was offended that she did not know about the single thing that takes up most of my time – but then I realised that few people outside the photography business know how much is done to the original RAW photo before the beautiful result is achieved. Apart from the 7-9 hours we spend covering the wedding, 7-10 more days are spent in editing the photos! Also, to stay at the top of his or her game, the photographer has to continually read and stay adept with new equipment and the technicalities of the job – all to make your photos look better.

Quality of Work

Be warned, comparing quotes and choosing the one that seems like the best deal on paper will come back and bite you more often than not! Rule of thumb – the fewer high-resolution photos your photographer give, the better quality you can expect – it’s actually a quite simple rule – if he gives fewer photos, then he has more time to spend perfecting the photos you get.

The little word “Album” can be compared to the word “Car”. A City Golf and a Bentley are both cars – get it? Most expensive photographers produce quality and durable luxury handmade albums; albums that would last a lifetime. But albums like these come with a price tag, and this is worked into the “expensive package”.

What You Get with a Pro

Wedding photographers charge a lot of money for a good reason. They put a lot of time and effort into the process. They typically work for six or more hours, and they bring a second photographer along with them. Also, they have expensive gear and handle the editing for you. They can also make photo albums for you, so you’ll always have a keepsake.

That’s why they are so expensive. They give you quite a bit.

Fortunately, you can get what you need without the cost by getting a little creative.

Cut Down on the Time

While most wedding photographers work for six-plus hours, that isn’t necessary. You can enjoy the benefits of using a professional without spending as much money by cutting down on the amount of time the photographer works for you. You can get the shots you need in two or three hours. That means you can spend a lot less money.

If you’re intent on going with a professional but don’t want to spend as much money, this is a smart way to go.

Do Your Own Editing

If you know your way around a computer, you might be able to handle your own editing. Have the photographer send you the RAW or JPEG files, and then you can take care of the editing. This can save you a significant amount of money, but keep in mind that not all wedding photographers will be willing to do this. After all, they will be handing over unfinished work, and some will not be comfortable with that.

Have a Pre-Wedding Studio Session

You can also save quite a bit of cash by renting a photography studio before the wedding. Photography studios have all the equipment you need for the shoot, plus plenty of props to use. Also, they are staffed with people who understand photography and can help you during the shoot.

Just bring a friend along who enjoys taking pictures. That friend can take some professional-looking shots of you and your significant other for a fraction of the cost of a real wedding photographer. Plus, since you’ll be inside, you won’t have to worry about running your gorgeous wedding attire before the main event.

Why is hiring a professional wedding photographer so important?

Is wedding photography the most important thing when it comes to your wedding? Nope, not at all, however, when it comes to planning your special day, it should be up there on the priority list of things to look at, budget for and book.

Wedding photography is important because it will capture your day, it will capture your memories, it will tell a story, and not just any story, it will tell a beautiful story of your special day, a day you will never forget. A story that you can show friends and family, your kids, and grandchildren, something you will have and can treasure forever.

You see your flowers will wilt, and your cake will quickly be eaten, your invites will be binned after the day, your dress shall be worn once, those shoes shall go back into their box, this isn’t me trying to be glum and miserable, this is about perspective, this is about helping you focus your budget on things that you may not put importance on, such as wedding photography.

One Day, And A Lot Of Memories

Earlier I mentioned about couples who didn’t put too much importance on wedding photography, and it can easily be forgotten or put down the pecking order because, on the day itself, you don’t have anything. If you go to a florist they will create beautiful bouquets for you, and your cake maker will make the most delicious and gorgeous looking cake for your day, the list goes on, the thing is here, these are things and items that will be there on your day, things that you and everyone will see. Yet when it comes to wedding photography you are paying for something you won’t see till after, and the best wedding photographers will go unnoticed, your guest won’t even know they are there.

When it comes to wedding planning, it is more than just one day, and it is about a lifetime of memories. It is about capturing moments, and it is about capturing emotion, it is about being able to relive the day through beautiful photos, it is about smiling at moments that you never knew happened, seeing the emotion on your family and friends faces, and most importantly of all, having a story you can treasure forever.
